Is your building ready for the next heatwave?

4Facilities · Originally sent 23 July 2026

Welcome to the July edition of the 4Facilities newsletter.

This month, we're focusing on an issue affecting organisations across the UK, rising temperatures and the increasing impact of prolonged heatwaves on buildings, workplaces and business operations.

Recent reports from the BBC, the Met Office and national media continue to highlight a clear trend: hotter summers are becoming the new normal. For organisations responsible for commercial buildings, schools, healthcare facilities and workplaces, this presents new operational challenges that can no longer be ignored.

At 4Facilities, we believe facilities management plays a critical role in helping organisations adapt, not simply by responding when problems occur, but by planning ahead and building resilience into every facility.

Is Your Building Ready for the UK's Hotter Summers?

Heatwaves are no longer rare events.

Across the UK this summer we've seen:

  • Increased pressure on offices, schools and healthcare environments to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.
  • Greater demand for air conditioning and cooling systems.
  • Rising energy consumption as buildings work harder to stay operational.
  • Growing conversations around employee wellbeing, workplace comfort and health & safety during extreme heat.

Many UK buildings were designed to retain heat during winter, not to cope with sustained periods of high summer temperatures.

As a result, many organisations are now reassessing how their buildings perform during warmer months and whether their current HVAC systems are fit for the future.

Expert Perspective from 4Facilities

From Comfort to Business Resilience

Cooling is no longer simply about comfort.

For today's organisations, effective cooling supports:

✔ Business continuity

✔ Employee wellbeing

✔ Compliance with workplace health and safety expectations

✔ Energy efficiency

✔ Protection of critical equipment and infrastructure

✔ Better occupant experience

At 4Facilities, we're helping organisations take a proactive approach through:

  • Air conditioning and HVAC surveys
  • Planned preventative maintenance
  • Heat resilience planning
  • Energy-efficient cooling solutions
  • Ventilation assessments
  • Compliance and workplace comfort reviews

Preparing before the next heatwave can significantly reduce operational disruption and unexpected costs.

Air Conditioning Supply Update

Why It Pays To Plan Ahead

Demand for air conditioning has risen sharply across UK homes and commercial buildings.

More than four million UK homes now have air conditioning, twice the number three years ago, while offices, schools, hotels and other businesses are also preparing for hotter summers.

At 4Facilities, we’re seeing the resulting shortages first-hand. Equipment is currently extremely difficult to source across both domestic and commercial systems, while installation schedules are filling quickly.

If you need cooling this year, it pays to act early. If you’re planning for 2027, autumn and winter are ideal times to get ahead.

You’ll be ready before the next heatwave, and benefit during winter too. Most modern air-conditioning systems are reversible air-to-air heat pumps and can provide around three units of heat for every unit of electricity used. Yes, air conditioning heats as well as cools!

July Spotlight

Three Contract Renewals. One Day.

One of our proudest moments this month was receiving confirmation of three contract renewals, all on the same day.

For us, this represents much more than renewing contracts.

It reflects the trust our clients place in our people, our service and our commitment to delivering consistently high standards.

Renewals don't happen by accident.

They are earned through:

  • Reliable engineering
  • Responsive support
  • Strong communication
  • Preventative maintenance
  • Long-term relationships

Every engineer on site, every member of our office team and everyone working behind the scenes contributes to these partnerships.

We're incredibly proud of the team and grateful for the confidence our clients continue to place in 4Facilities as we move towards 2027 and beyond.

Thank you to every member of the team for making this possible.

Facilities Management Tip of the Month

Four Questions Every Building Manager Should Ask This Summer

  • Is your air conditioning system operating at peak efficiency?
  • Has your HVAC system been serviced recently?
  • Are occupants comfortable throughout the building during warmer weather?
  • Could preventative maintenance today avoid costly breakdowns later this summer?

If you're unsure about any of these, now is the ideal time for a facilities review.

👉 Thinking about whether your current service support is delivering real value?

The 4Facilities team can review your existing maintenance approach, recent service activity, or operational challenges and provide practical feedback focused on reliability, response, and long-term performance.

Facilities Management Tip of the Month

A significant part of our work is in environments where disruption and downtime are not an option, including private schools, academies, universities, care homes, healthcare settings and busy hospitality venues.

Because we understand term times, exam periods, safeguarding requirements and resident needs, we plan maintenance and projects around how your buildings actually operate day-to-day. That means:

  • Scheduling intrusive works outside teaching hours or term time wherever possible
  • Prioritising stable temperatures and resilience in care and healthcare settings, with appropriate response times and backup where needed

Our directly employed engineers get to know the sites they look after, helping to build the long-term relationships and consistency that many of our clients value.
